Top Ten Walt Disney Silly Symphonies I've Seen

     On August 22, 1929, Walt Disney Pictures released the first animated short in its new "Silly Symphonies" series, "The Skeleton Dance". To celebrate the milestone, I have decided to rank the top ten animated shorts in the Silly Symphonies series that I have seen. As with my other rankings, the shorts are ranked according to their rating on their Internet Movie Database, or IMDB.


1. The Old Mill

Release Date: August 1937 (Venice Film Festival)

IMDB Rating: 7.8

IMDB Summary: "As a thunderstorm approaches, birds, mice and other creatures try to stay safe and dry in an old mill."


2. The Skeleton Dance

Release Date: August 22, 1929

IMDB Rating: 7.6

IMDb Summary: "The clock strikes midnight, the bats fly from the belfry, a dog howls at the full moon, and two black cats fight in the cemetery: a perfect time for four skeletons to come out and dance a bit."


3. The Ugly Duckling

Release Date: April 7, 1939

IMDB Rating: 7.6

IMDB Summary: "A baby duckling is shunned by his family because he is different. He is also rejected by all of the other birds and animals. Finally a mother swan adopts him as one of her brood."


4. Three Little Pigs

Release Date: May 27, 1933

IMDB Rating: 7.5

IMDB Summary: "The Three Little Pigs each build a house of different material. The Big Bad Wolf comes along and blows away the straw and stick homes, but is unable to destroy the house of bricks."


5. Music Land

Release Date: October 5, 1935

IMDB Summary: "The princess violin from the sleepy Land of Symphony is chased by a more lively alto saxophone from the Isle of Jazz. Soon the queen (a viola) discovers them and locks the sax in the metronome."


6. Santa's Workshop

IMDB Summary: "Santa's little helpers must hurry to finish the toys before Christmas Day."


7. The Tortoise And The Hare

Release Date: January 5, 1935

IMDB Rating: 7.1

IMDB Summary: "Big race. Hare, fast and in lead, stops to loaf and show off to girl bunnies. Tortoise, plodding along at steady, slow pace, wins, although hare tries a last minute burst of speed."


8. The Grasshopper And The Ants

Release Date: February 10, 1934

IMDB Rating: 7.1

IMDB Summary: "When a lazy grasshopper prefers to sing and dance rather than forage like his friends the ants, he learns to regret it when winter approaches. The ants save his life and in return he entertains them with his music."


9. The Night Before Christmas

Release Date: December 9, 1933

IMDB Rating: 7.0

IMDB Summary: "A narrator sings the opening stanzas of the classic poem while we see the house at rest. Santa lands on the roof, comes down the chimney, and opens his bag. The toys march out and decorate the tree, with the toy soldiers shooting balls from their cannon, a toy airplane stringing a garland like skywriting, and the toy firemen applying snow."


10. Three Little Wolves

Release Date: April 18, 1936

IMDB Rating: 7m0

IMDB Summary: "Two frivolous pigs blow the "wolf" horn one too many times and Practical Pig ignores them. The Big Bad Wolf and Three Little Wolves capture the pigs and eventually Practical Pig manages to rescue them in the nick of time with "Wolf Pacifier.""
