Getting Caught Up On The First Two Seasons Of "Only Murders In The Building"

"Only Murders In The Building" Season One Poster With Steve Martin, Martin Short & Selena Gomez

Author's Note: The following article contains spoilers for the first two seasons of "Only Murders In The Building". Please do not read any further if you have not seen the first two seasons and do not wish to have them spoiled for you.

This Tuesday August 8, the third season of "Only Murders In The Building" is set to premiere on Hulu. The series, which stars Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, revolved around a trio of residents at The Arconia, an apartment building in New York City, who decide to start a true crime podcast centered on murders that take place in said building-hence the name of their podcast (and the series), "Only Murders In The Building".

The first season revolves around the murder of Tim Kono (Julian Cihi), a resident of the Arconia and, along with Mabel Mora (Gomez), Oscar Torres (Aaron Dominguez) and Zoe Cassidy (Olivia Reis), a member of the Hardy Boys, a group of teenagers who lived at the Arconia but fell apart after one of their members, Zoe, was found dead and another, Oscar, was sent to prison for it. Mora, along with Charles Haden-Savage (Martin) and Oliver Putnam (Short) work together to try and solve Kono's murder. The Season One finale "Open And Shut" reveals that Kono was murdered by Jan Bellows (Amy Ryan), a resident of the Arconia that he had an affair with and who was dating Charles for most of Season One. After Jan is arrested, Charles, Oliver and Mabel celebrate their success on the rooftop-but their celebration is short lived when Charles and Oliver receive an ominous text telling them to get out the building. They rush to go get Mabel, who had left to get some more champagne, only to see her standing over the dead body of the Arconia's board president, Bunny Folger (Jayne Houdyshell).

The second season, naturally, revolves around the trio attempting to solve Bunny's murder while also trying to clear their names. A rival true crime podcaster named Cinda Canning (Tina Fey), who rose to fame with her podcast "All Is Not OK In Oklahoma", centered around the disappearance of Oklahoma resident Becky Butler, and is determined to prove the trio's guilt and with the help of her assistant Poppy White (Adina Vernon) starts her own podcast, "Only Murderers In The Building". As the season progresses, the trio become increasingly suspicious of Cinda, convinced that she's behind Bunny's murder. However,  in the Season Two finale, titled "I Know Who Did It", it's revealed that the person behind the murders is actually Cinda's assistant, Poppy, who, in anonther twist, is revealed to actually be Becky Butler. It turns out that Becky faked her disappearance in order to get away from her abusive father and boss and murdered Bunny in order to create a story for a podcast.

Once Becky is taken into custody, the series jumps ahead to one year where Oliver is celebrating the premier of his new Broadway play. Prior to the curtain rising, Charles exchanges some words with Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd), a fellow actor and apparently somebody who he has some bad blood with if their conversation is any indication. During the opening scene of the play, however, Ben begins coughing and then collapses onstage. Charles calls out for help as the audience realizes that this is not part of the show-Ben Glenroy is dead.

Thus, the third season will revolve around the trio attempting to solve the murder of  Ben Glenroy. Can they succeed like they did in the first two seasons? We will find out beginning this Tuesday.
