"Steamboat Willie" Enters Public Domain

Image
Today, January 1, 2024, one of the most iconic animated shorts in American history officially entered the public domain. "Steamboat Willie", which was originally produced and released by Walt Disney Animation Studios on November 18, 1928, has entered the public domain after its 95 year copyright finally expired. The copyright expiration means that Disney no longer has the exclusive rights to the versions of Mickey and Minnie Mouse that appear in the short, although they will continue to hold the copyright to versions of Mickey and Minnie from shorts released after "Steamboat Willie".     The entire "Steamboat Willie" short can be seen below. When will other Mickey Mouse animated shorts enter the public domain? Based on current U.S. copyright law, which states that a work enters the public domain on January 1st 95 years after a work is first released, the following Mickey Mouse animated shorts will enter the public domain in the following years

"The Night Before Christmas (1968)" Review

Image
Today, December 23, marks the 200th anniversary of the first time that the poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas" (better known as " The Night Before Christmas", allegedly written by Clement Clark Moore, was published in the Troy Sentinel. To celebrate the milestone, I thought I would review an animated Christmas special that provides a fictional account of how Moore came to write his famous poem-the 1968 special "The Night Before Christmas". We open in the month of December 1822, a few days before Christmas and one year before "A Visit From St. Nicholas" was first published. We then cut to the Moore's house, where the three Moore Children (Clement, Emily and Charity), housekeeper Gretchen and the family dog Clyde are busy baking Christmas treats as the special's opening song "Savory Serenade" plays in the background. The older Clement Moore is preparing to go out of town for a few days and promises to bring each of his kids and

Hallmark Channel Featured On Jeopardy

Image
During Thursday December 21st's episode of "Jeopardy", the third of three semifinal games in the most recent edition of the Second Chance Tournament,  one of the categories was titled "A Very Hallmark Christmas Movie". To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time that Hallmark Channel has been featured as a Jeopardy category. The episode's contestants (Michael Vaz, Karen Morris and Iris Masucci) would combined to correctly answer four of the five questions, missing only the $1,000 clue. (When playing along at home, I only missed the $800). Iris would go on to win the game by exactly one dollar ($5,400) over Karen ($5,3999) and advance to tonight's Second Chance Tournament Finals.  Below is a clip from Jeopardy's "A Very Hallmark Christmas Movie" Category from the official Jeopardy YouTube page.

Hallmark Channel And The Celebrity Paradox

Image
If you have been watching Hallmark Channel, and more specifically the Countdown To Christmas programming, over the past two years, you may have noticed something peculiar about some of the movies. Mainly, the fact that they reference other Hallmark Channel movies.     It started with 2022's "Haul Out The Holly", in which Emily (Lacey Chabert) is seen watching "Christmas In Vienna", which stars Brennan Elliott. (Elliott and Chabert have appeared together in nine movies that have premiered on either Hallmark Channel or Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. They are, in order of release, All Of My Heart; A Christmas Melody; All Of My Heart: Inn Love; All Of My Heart: The Wedding; Crossword Mysteries: A Puzzle To Die For; Crossword Mysteries: Proposing Murder; Crossword Mysteries: Abracadaver; Crossword  Mysteries: Terminal Descent and Crossword Mysteries: Riddle Me Dead.)     This trend has continued so far in 2023 with two Countdown To Christmas films.
